Crying does not indicate that you are weak. Since birth, it has always been a sign that you are alive.

Happy Independence Day, from Charlotte Brontë

  • Rochester: Jane, be still; don't struggle so like a wild, frantic bird, that is rending its own plumage in its desperation.
  • Jane: I am no bird; and no net ensnares me; I am a free human being, with an independent will; which I now exert to leave you.

It’s Charlotte Bronte’s Birthday!!!!

I really should not be taking a break from my Modern Drama papers to post this, but it’s only the first day of dead days.  So I’m fine, right?

The Bronte sisters have factored importantly in my life this year.  The new Jane Eyre film came out last May.  And as cited in earlier posts, my first essay for my first tutorial at Oxford was a comparison between Jane Eyreand Anne’s The Tenant of Wildfell Hall.  Plus, I saw the full portrait of the three sisters (the inset of just Charlotte is pictured above).

Too bad this isn’t quite enough of an excuse to really procrastinate and read Villette today …
